Thought I would post the paperwork farang have to have. To go to India from Thailand.
1. You have to have to have at least two pages in your passport book available.
2. You must have two recent pics with a white background.
3. You must show your departure and return air tickets.
4. Must show your reservations. Upon arrival.
5. Complete an on line application. Make sure it is EXACTLY as your passport.
6. Submit paperwork and wait for approval.
As few side notes:
You cannot get a 6 month visa in Chiang Mai! I went, and was turned down. Nothing mentioned on the web site. That I found.
There is a computer service staffed in the BKK India office that will help you fill out all paperwork. If you need assistance. ( very helpful )
After all paperwork was submitted and around 3,500 baht paid. I waited 7 days for the visa.
All they give you in BKK is a double entry visa. Same cost as a multiple entry. The application says double or multiple but after talking to the office. Only a double is available. This one really threw me. I wanted to visit other country's in the region while in India. Now I can only visit one?
The rules are getting better, It used to be, if you left India you had to stay gone for two months. Now that rule has been lifted..... very glad about that.
It has taken me the better part of two months to get all my paperwork and visas in order. I got a retirement visa for Thailand first. Then a reentry permit.
I wanted a 6 month visa for India. So had to come back from Chiang Mai to BKK to get it.
A few other things that I want to do and have not been successful at is. Get a state rail number. For buying rail tickets. It is not a simple procedure if out of the country. I have tried 3 time now and for some reason they keep saying they do not have me on the computer? May have to wait until there to sort it out.
I want to travel rail most of the time. I have read travel in India on the first class rail is Very Nice. And enjoyable.
Will be heading to Kolcotta first. Then will just wing it. Will be there for a little over 5 months.
Been doing research on the birding hot spots there. So will try to hit at leas 10 or so while in India. Bird photography is my goal. But travel is number one.
I will keep a diary. ( blog ) on this trip to help others if they want to bird India.
Mainly going to see if India is a good location for a prolonged visit. For birding and bird photography. Transportation is my main concern. Here in Thailand I bought a pickup for birding. India will be very different as I will not have transportation. I have not ruled out the possibility of buying or renting a vehicle while there. But will have to wait and see.
Will be back in Thailand in March.
Looking forward to a new adventure in birding. I just started birding here in Thailand and after 3 years am wanting to try something different. So! Heading to India for a new adventure.
Check back in mid Oct. for trip reports.
