Taman Negara, Malaysia is actually three parks. Most birders go to Kelantan. I wanted to see all three and explore a little. So, I did!.. Long story short I went back to Kelantan. After arranging for a cabin. I decided to meet the staff. A friendly bunch of guys and gals for sure. ( Great food )
When I arrived the park informed me the Canopy walk way was closed for repairs. Luckily there was fruiting tree close by and I stayed there most of the time.

Kelantan is a place I will explore a little more. Northern Malaysia is so much different than Thailand it kinda threw me a curve.
The Malaysian government owns and farms the mountain regions around TamanNegara. I could not get used to not having people around me and a thriving economy? Most of the region around Taman Negara that I saw was a government owned palm tree plantation. With NO PEOPLE .... Or the infrastructure, that entrepreneurs develop.
Like hotels, guest houses. Nice warm small places to spend a few hours or the night. NOT THERE???
Maybe I am missing something? But, there was nothing to make me want to return. Other than the park! I love travel and getting there is 95% of the enjoyment for me. To interact with the people, stopping and talking to the locals and having fun on my journey. The drive from Southern Thailand into Northern Malaysia to Taman Negara, was just a big disappointment to me.
Right down the road from Kalantan. Was another park associated with Taman Negaria, Terengganu. Another splendid and beautiful place the government is making into a huge water park.. LOL I am not kidding. It is pushed as the largest man made lake in S.E. Asia. It is going to be very expensive. I was approached by boat operators that wanted from 100-300 US dollars for a tour of the lake... I saw exactly three people there the whole time there. All three farang ( foreigners ) like myself. It was dead. Needless to say I lost interest pretty quick. I did see a few birds and hornbills. But, just not my cup of tea.
Next, Fraser's Hill. I had a wonderful time here. After getting closer to Kuala Lumpur. Getting into central Malaysia was a lot nicer travel experience for me. There were a few nice small towns to explore before going up the mountain to Fraser's Hill. And I had a pleasant journey. I relaxed in a nice hotel at the resort area and the birding was very good.
Guess you can guess I was not impressed with the drive down... :) Boring, is an understatement here folks.
This is just my view of the places I visited. I hear many many good things about Taman Negara. So am hoping for a good visit in the next few months. As a traveler first and a birder a distant second. I was not impressed by that part of Malaysia. But, different people have different views. That is what makes things interesting...
Have a good one and good birding, Gary
